Weekend Activities

After much discussion, we decided to take the hotel taxi service for a day trip to Arusha. Our driver was a great tour guide, pointing out the sights as we travelled. The chaos of trucks, cars, boda-bodas (motorcycles), bajas (three-wheeled taxis), and people pushing carts is very entertaining when you're not the driver!

"there's an elephant in the street" (statue - haha)

In Arusha we first went to the African Cultural Centre. It turned out to be more of a gift and gallery shop than a museum but it was fascinating nonetheless. The gallery was filled with beautiful artwork. After a couple of hours we had brain overload and it was time for lunch.

Everest, our driver, took us to George’s Tavern, a Greek-styled restaurant with a full western and Tanzanian menu. We should have planned to share a meal because the portions were more than generous.

Next stop was Sanaa. This is a sheltered workshop for people with disabilities. They make beautiful handiwork; from weaving to glassblowing, sewing to leather work. Where they can, they source recyclable materials to make into works of art.

By then it was time to rest and return to the hotel for the rest of the evening.

On Sunday, Boaz and Veneranda took us to church with them. It was all in Swahili, but it’s beautiful to worship together even though we didn’t understand a word. In true African fashion the service was almost 4 hours long with lots of singing, prayer and preaching.  After church we returned to Boaz and Veneranda's home for lunch and visiting.   It was an unexpected blessing to work together with fellow believers on this Catalyst assignment. What a wonderful time we had together.

As we continued on our travels, we had a few expensive adventures with repairs needed to truck and trailer.  Ouch.  As one sign I saw said:...
