Hanging out with teenagers

Jeremy and Andrea Ireland are here in Bahir Dar with Global Outreach International.  Jeremy is working with Campus Crusade for Christ, disciplining university students.  Andrea is part of a ministry to street boys.

I get to hang out with sweaty teenagers.  Andrea has been so gracious to include me in her work.  She stops by every morning to pick me up and away we go to the church to run the morning program for the street boys.  They are waiting eagerly for breakfast, and ready for the teaching sessions.  I get to teach the English lesson and they try to teach me Amharic!  I love the sound of the language and don't mind sitting in on the other sessions, whether or not some of the staff translate for me.

After the boys have lunch and go on their way, Andrea invites me to her home for lunch, usually delicious injera and sauce made by her Ethiopian cook.   In the afternoon she often includes me in her plans which today included running errands.  We went to the open air market and to some little shops.  We also spent some time at a barber shop visiting with a boy who used to be in their program and now is working as a barber.  I feel so blessed to have Andrea in my life to help me navigate this city and culture and be part of a ministry.

Dave had a good day today, too.  He had a shopping adventure this morning, bought some things for the computer.  Instead of bajaj, he got to try out riding the mini-bus, where there might have been twice as many passengers as seats!  Seatbelts?  At the university everything went very well - well, no internet, but that was least of his worries.

He may not speak much English but he communicated that he wanted to take a selfie with me.

Twelve Trips of 2024 Part 2

As we continued on our travels, we had a few expensive adventures with repairs needed to truck and trailer.  Ouch.  As one sign I saw said:...
